Financial Constraints: Case Study: Trainspotting

Low budget filmmaking advice
- Resource Film Making - using the resources that you already have.

- Important to establish a budget

- Make a list of resources, including a list of locations you can shoot at for free.

- Make a list of actors as well as how much experience they have.

- Make a list of equipment. cameras, props for cheap or free.

- The script must be written before anything is shot.
when writing keep the locations to a minimum to cut down on costs.
Write 4 main roles to keep things simple.
The 4 roles that you have should cater to the strengths of individuals to get the best results.
Avoid writing night scenes because its hard to light with a small budget.
Avoid writing CGI scenes unless you can do them at a high quality your self.

- Pre Production
Location scouting is important to find places to shoot as well as the best time to shoot in those locations.
Scheduling is very important if you are borrowing to make sure that you can get equipment when you need it as well as having actors available when your shooting.

TRAINSPOTTING
Released in 1996.
The overall budget was 3.5 million pounds, which is a big sum of money but not a Hollywood level budget.
Directed by Danny Boyle, Written by Andrew MacDonald and Produced by John Hodge.
Based on a book by Irvine Welsh about heroin addicts in Scotland and them trying to kick the habit.
When turning a novel into a film it must have screen rights. The rights had already had been sold to Noel Gay who made Red Dwarf. Ther rights belonged to ITV which wanted to co-produce.
Hollywood also wanted to get in on Trainspotting who offered 250,000 dollars knowing that the story was profitable.
Channel 4, who promised to pay for the entire film, said that if they couldn't sort out the mess between Hollywood and ITV they wouldn't put any money into the project.
The author of the novel was also on Boyle's side which was useful.
eventually, the finalised deal was that Noel Gay, the owner of the script rights, had 2% of the film but no creative control as well as his name on the credits.
The pre-production for Trainspotting lasted for seven weeks, which includes everything that is organised before the film is shot.
Ewan McGregor was the first person to be cast in the film.
All the rehearsals for the film took place in a rented flat in a tower block in Glasgow.
The movie is set in Edinborough but primarily shot in Glasgow.
A crew was finally assembled led by Boyle who went to multiple locations in Glasgow to find out where they would shoot the movie.

  1. Initially some excellent notes here Alex!
Did you miss the lesson with Mr Phillipson after I taught the first half of the 'Trainspotting' Prezi? Your notes reflect the point in which our lesson stopped, however you're missing the rest of the notes.

    Thanks,
    Miss C
